Have you ever felt impatient with the pace of things growing or developing? From the image above, it would be tough to conclude that any sign of renewal of growth is present. One could see the cut ash tree, which was condemned after the emerald ash borer infestation, and that’s it. What I see, and mainly because I helped to seed, is growth—very slow growth indeed. About six months ago, during the Fall, we drilled holes and inoculated the stumps with shiitake and chicken-of-the-wood spawns. If you look closely in the picture, you will see remains of paraffin that was dabbed to protect the spawns from contamination and drying out. Yes, the mycelium of shiitake is growing, slowly and hidden. If all the conditions allow it, it may take another couple of years to see any sign of the mushroom. Sometimes, the eyes can’t see the steady and inevitable growth within you and others, but there are. We can rest assured that it is all in God’s perfect timing for the development to be complete.
