Long story short, around 2007, I made the lampshade porcelain base, completely white. Pit firing is an ancient technique for firing pottery, and in that year, my teacher and other professional artists planned for one. My lampshade base was fired that way. I thought it came out beautiful, covered with dark spots of the burnt wood and light fingerprints, most likely of the people who handled it after the fire was out. Interestingly, the people I showed it to tried to analyze the piece, and I know they did not see the same beauty that I did, nor its functionality. We moved many places, and the lampshade base moved with us to Brazil. It was also stored in my parents' house, and finally, it found its way back with my in-laws this Spring. In every moving stop, I tried (glancing, not eager) to find a shade, metals, and parts that would fit it. No assembly, not much success. It is a tiny base, and the 1-in opening is too small for most hardware to look nice. Now, hopefully, you understand my fascination with this lamp to finally shine brightly!
